Maria Susana Lopez Gonzalez, MD

Dr. Maria Lopez Gonzalez is a pediatric gastroenterologist with specialized training in advanced endoscopy. She earned her medical degree from Universidad del Azuay in Cuenca, Ecuador. Dr. Lopez Gonzalez completed a residency in general pediatrics at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. She pursued a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, where she also served as chief fellow. Dr. Lopez Gonzalez then concluded an advanced endoscopy fellowship through Baylor College of Medicine in a combined pediatric/adult program at Christus Children’s Hospital/University Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Her clinical interests include interventional endoscopy, pancreatic and biliary disorders, and minimally invasive gastrointestinal procedures.

Dr. Lopez Gonzalez is board certified in general pediatrics. She has presented extensively at national meetings and contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications focused on pediatric gastroenterology and pancreatology. Dr. Lopez Gonzalez is a member of the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN), where she serves on the Pancreas Committee and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) Special Interest Group. She is also a member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE). In addition to her clinical and academic activities, Dr. Lopez Gonzalez has contributed to resident and fellow recruitment efforts at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is dedicated to the treatment of a wide variety of gastrointestinal problems in children and adolescents. The team employs a multidisciplinary approach that brings together an array of specialists to deliver personalized care to the patient and family. The Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Center provides comprehensive support and management for children and young adults with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, while the Gastrointestinal (GI) Center offers nutritional assessment and counseling for overweight children, as well as those with dietary restrictions. Consultations with the division’s board-certified physicians are offered in both English and Spanish at the hospital’s main campus near Coral Gables and Nicklaus Children’s outpatient centers located from southern Miami-Dade to Martin counties.
