Jonanlis Ramirez Alcantara, MD, FAAP, DABOM  Pediatric Endocrinologist 

 

Dr. Jonanlis Ramirez Alcantara is a triple board-certified pediatric endocrinologist and obesity medicine specialist, certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics in Pediatrics and Pediatric Endocrinology, and by the American Board of Obesity Medicine in Obesity Medicine. She is one of only a few pediatric endocrinologists in the state of Florida who possesses board certification in obesity medicine, distinguishing her as a leader in her field. Her clinical expertise include obesity, thyroid disorders, adrenal insufficiency, growth disorders, diabetes and adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD).    Dr. Ramirez Alcantara pursued a fellowship in pediatric endocrinology at the prestigious Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, where she trained under world-renowned specialists in pediatric endocrine and metabolic diseases. During her fellowship, Dr. Ramirez Alcantara's research was focused on adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), a rare, inherited genetic disorder that primarily affects the nervous system and adrenal glands, which led to multiple peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. Since then, Dr. Ramirez Alcantara has remained active in the ALD research and patient community. She is one of only a few pediatric endocrinologists in the world with direct research and clinical experience with this disorder and frequently presents at national and international meetings organized by ALD Connect, as well as the Pediatric Endocrine Society and Endocrine Society annual meetings.    Dr. Ramirez Alcantara completed her pediatric residency at Lincoln Medical Center, affiliated with Weill Cornell University Medical College in New York City, where she was named chief resident for her outstanding leadership and clinical excellence.     Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Dr. Ramirez Alcantara graduated magna cum laude from the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), the oldest university in the Americas, founded in 1538.     With a strong commitment to advancing medical knowledge, providing evidence-based care and prioritizing the well-being of children and their families, Dr. Ramirez Alcantara contributes regularly to research in all areas of pediatric endocrinology, with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national and international medical conferences.    The Division of Endocrinology at Nicklaus Children's offers a complete array of diagnostic, treatment, and consulting services for infants, children, and adolescents with endocrine disorders. The care team is dedicated to fulfilling the medical and support needs of children and their families through a multidisciplinary approach that has helped children from around the world. Consultations with the division’s board-certified endocrinologists are offered at the hospital’s main campus near Coral Gables, as well as at select Nicklaus Children’s outpatient centers located from southern Miami-Dade to Martin counties.
